Well-Being Starts Within Before It Can Move Without.

The University of Wisconsin states that "{Well-being is} not a static "thing" – but a set of skills that can be learned and cultivated over time, just like learning to play a musical instrument or riding a bike."

What aspects of well make a being into a well-being?

We do think it is somewhat simple, but oh, so hard. First, let's start with the four aspects of well-being.

Physical, Social, Mental and Spiritual Well-Being. The four areas in the image above make up the parts of our world - each one of them leads to an aspect of well-being. Take away one of them, or have a sickness in one of them, and the rest suffer.

The best part of all - by being well, you empower others to be well, and they empower others, and collectively, well, it doesn't get much better than that.

#1 - Physical Well-Being

When health is lost, something is lost.

This quote comes from Billy Graham, an American televangelist. But we hope that the author doesn't sway your reading this article in any form, we are not here to debate religion.

What we notice is that an ultimate truth - when our health is lost, something is truly lost. If you have chronic pain, most likely, this dictates your life and overshadows all you do.

As a 20-year chronic sinusitis sufferer, I was sick all-the-time, and I knew what it was like to be in a state of malaise.

When you are sick, a lot is affected. Where is your physical well-being right now?

#2 - Social Well-Being

If surviving the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that we have a lot of social awkwardness to overcome, again. It's like being in middle school all over! (Help us all.) How are your social relationships post-pandemic? Safe? Secure? Or did they face a radical shift?

Science has proven that strong social health may be more beneficial to you than quitting smoking, losing weight, or lowering your blood pressure.

Where is your state of social well-being right now?

#3 - Mental Well-Being

Now, we dive into the abstract concept - first up, your mental health. The beloved CDC (how they helped us through Covid-19) states that our mental health:

affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

While mental health is synonymous with mental illness, it is important to note that nearly one in five adults in the United States is living with a mental illness.

Where is your state of mental well-being right now?

#4 - Spiritual Well-Being

The last of our abstract concepts is spiritual well-being. Before you think this means religion and you run away, please hold on. Yes, this may include religion, but for this purpose is defined by Northwest University as expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life, including one's morals and ethics. It may or may not involve religious activities.

Take a moment, pause, and consider this aspect of your wellness. Sometimes there are attachments here that may serve us well, but they also could not. Where is your state of spiritual well-being right now?
